I saw an interesting, thought-provoking movie at the Ken Cinema this week. A Place at the Table explores the issue of hunger in America and how it has become a serious socioeconomic and cultural problem in our nation.
Congratulations to interaction design manager Deni Cook and his wife, Mary, on the birth of Cora June last night! We are overjoyed for Deni + Mary in welcoming their little bundle of love into their lives. In Deni’s words after she was born–“let’s do this life!”
Last weekend was product development manager Julian Groeli’s birthday! To celebrate, he headed out to Torrey Pines Gliderport for a paragliding adventure. It was a gorgeous San Diego day–click below to see some photos of his birthday flight!
DD Innovation Camp is a program that we created 6 years ago to educate engineering students on the importance of incorporating human factors and usability into their work. We encourage design thinking and challenge the students to engineer great solutions with the user experience in mind.
In our most recent DD Innovation Camp, we hosted 80 students from the UC Irvine Henry Samueli School of Engineering for project presentations. The students from UCI are working on real world projects given to them by alumni that are now working for large corporations and research labs, and have been getting guidance throughout the year from those mentors as well as our own Bill Leach.
Our panel of experts comprised of DDSTUDIO leadership and industry experts gave invaluable critiques of each project, encouraging the students to achieve further innovation through looking at the overall experience. The students were then given the opportunity to mingle with our experts over pizza (LOTS of pizza).

Designer Matt Kranz has a new toy: generative coding software. It is used to translate controlled, scripted actions into often randomized and organic repeating elements; resulting in some very interesting imagery. “It’s pretty cool to explore the realm of free form generated by tight mathematical commands,” says Matt, “these were based, and slightly modified codes originally written by Matt Pearson. Fun with numbers!” Check out some of Matt’s creations below.
DDSTUDIO has a history of working with universities to help teach engineering students about the importance of design. Our goal is to reinforce the notion that a cross-disciplinary education of engineering and design will enhance their perspective when creating a product, giving graduates an edge in their field.
When you walk into DDSTUDIO, one of the first things you encounter is our library. Our collection has been curated for over 25 years, and contains everything from Isamu Noguchi Sculptural Design to a book solely dedicated to fountain pens. With the holidays upon us, we asked our designers to share their favorite book from our collection or their own–hopefully we can help inspire a gift idea or stocking stuffer for the designophile in your life!
In a knowledge-based economy, I’d expect to see and hear a lot about thinking, and how thoughts are being translated into actions that deliver business results. Yet relatively little thinking seems to be going on.
This makes no sense. Knowledge workers are paid to think, so why aren’t more of them thinking more of the time? Lots of people are analyzing data, then acting on the results. Nothing wrong with that, right? Yet surprisingly often, there’s little or no thought going into what the data represents: are we measuring what we should measure, so we can learn something about the problem we need to solve? Or are we merely looking at what we can measure? Are we interpreting objectively, or looking for what we want to find?
Congratulations to Independa on their CONNECT Most Innovative New Product Award for Integrated CloudCare! DDSTUDIO worked with Independa on the user interface for Angela, a part of CloudCare that allows seniors to stay socially engaged while receiving medication reminders, appointment notices, and more.
