Embracing Early Design Integration
Background & Collaboration
Integrated design can take a backseat in the early stages of a startup when the primary focus is trained on technology and engineering.
DDSTUDIO’s collaboration with Field Medical however, perfectly illustrates how incorporating design elements early on can significantly enhance a company’s image and product vision.
Field Medical, is not your typical startup. CEO Steven Mickelson is a preeminent cardiac surgeon who has created other medical products. Steven recognized early on how essential design would be in the process of creating an exceptional device.
How We Began
The process began with DDSTUDIO creating thematic boards and developing a visual brand language. This provided a consistent aesthetic that was implemented across investor decks, presentations, and their website.
Our Objective was to translate Steven’s vision into a visual representation giving a realistic representation of the final result and the marketable product. The Hollywood Renders we produced provided an aspirational image for the internal stakeholders and BOD, and clarified the value proposition for investors.
Achieving Goals
Field Medical is raising capital. So for us, we needed to help Steven and the Field Medical team present the finished product to inspire investors.
The stakes are high with startups. With this team, it was clear that to take market share in this industry the device had to make doctors’ and patients’ lives better. It also had to be able to go into manufacturing immediately following the investor commitment so the engineering CAD files had to be production-ready.
The Collaboration Continues
With consistent brand language, Hollywood renders of the final product and an elevated and consistent look and feel, investor presentations took on a different cadence. Not only were investors excited but the team was highly focused and ready to execute the Field Medical vision.
Whether through a custom manufacturing facility or a pre-existing relationship with a manufacturing provider, Field Medical is ready to go into production immediately post-investor round. And DDSTUDIO will be there to support iterations throughout the entire journey.
The Takeaway
Incorporating design at an early stage might seem premature to some, but as Field Medical discovered, it can play a crucial role in aligning the team, attracting investors, and most importantly, manifesting the startup’s vision into reality. After all, startups are all about making visions come to life.
